Land Use Impacts of Private Sewage Systems in Wisconsin

Rural and suburban development has been and will continue to depend
upon private on-site sewage disposal systems. Changing technologies for sewage disposal that reduce site limitations to development have raised a broad set of land use concerns. Based on a study in Wisconsin, the impacts of new sewage technologies on rural sprawl and agricultural and forest land conversion are no different than that of conventional on-site systems. However, these new technologies add to the development pressures on certain land areas, making the use of traditional health oriented land use regulatory policy increasingly ineffective for managing land use.
