Farmers’ Guide for Protecting Water Quality on Long Island

This guide is intended to be a resource for farmers, their advisors  and communities in their efforts to protect Long Island’s water resources while maintaining a vibrant and profitable agricultural industry.

Specifically, the publication was created for three primary purposes:

  • Clarify ways that fruit, vegetable and other specialty crop growers on Long Island can use conservation practices and state and federal conservation programs to protect water quality;
  • Explain conservation practices that Long Island farmers can use in simple ways to help non-farmers better understand such practices; and
  • Foster stronger local partnerships on Long Island as well as with state and federal agencies to leverage more resources to help farmers address the severe water quality problems in the region.
